This is an exciting opportunity for a professional,highly motivated Healthcare Scientist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) tojoin the Genetics Section at Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL). The GeneticsSection offers an extensive portfolio of tests for a wide range of clinicalapplications including single gene and mitochondrial disorders,pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and molecular oncology/haematology. Thelaboratory is well equipped with the latest technology and has establishednational and international research collaborations.
This is a part-time fixed-term opportunity coveringparental leave until approximately March 2022, that will see you working in abusy genetics laboratory that provides diagnostic testing nationally andinternationally. The preferredroster pattern to fit with service delivery requirements is 8.30am to 5pm, 3days per week. However, alternative roster patterns may be considered.
As a passionate and enthusiastic Medical LaboratoryScientist, you’ll provide ongoing support to core service delivery in Geneticsas we continue to translate testing to new and emerging platforms.
The Role:Where you fit in
In this role, youwill be responsible for:
Handling avariety of patient samples and processing these appropriately for the requiredgenetic testing;
Performing a wide range ofmolecular genetic techniques such as PCR, MLPA, fragment analysis, sangersequencing, NGS, and microarrays;
The appropriate use, maintenanceand calibration of laboratory equipment;
Using specific software toassist with analysis, interpretation and record keeping;
Working effectively with otherstaff in the department to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients.
Your skills willinclude:
Being a highly motivated team player with excellent interpersonal skills and able to work as part of a team as well as independently;
Being organised and efficient with effective time management skills;
Registration (or eligibility register) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the New Zealand Medical Sciences Council is essential;
Experience in molecular genetics or cytogenetics would be an advantage,however, full training will be provided;
Previous experience working as a scientistin a diagnostic genetic laboratory is advantageous.
