Want to be part of an exciting new partnership project to unlock the creative potential of Whakatane youth? Do you have a background in youth facilitation and/or Te Reo me ona Tikanga Maori and have a passion for the arts?Toiora Academy is designed to give students the confidence and skills to pursue an arts and/or related employment pathway. The academy will include an 18 week introduction to Maori and Indigenous Art programme (Toi Maruata, level 3) where youth will be introduced to various toi, both traditional and contemporary, in the context of tikanga and Matauraga Maori. Graphic design, paint, whakairo, digital/3D design, ta moko design, film/production and photography are some art mediums the youth will be exposed to. Wellness activities and wrap-around support will be provided to youth throughout the duration of the programme by a partner organisation.
This youth-focused Kaiawhina (teaching/kaiako support) position will pay a critical role in ensuring all youth are engaged and ultimately, find success in their Toiora Academy journey. This diverse role will provide support to students and the kaiako during classes, noho and off-site excursions and assist with transport provision, facilitation, youth engagement activity and project work.
The successful applicant will be required to work within a multi-disciplinary team alongside the kaiako and the partner organisation’s two youth workers. They will assist in the facilitation of curriculum-based activities and lesson plans and will be required to coordinate guest artists and toi specialists to deliver workshops.
The ideal candidate will have:
A certificate in relevant area
Experience working with youth (aged 16-24 years)
A clean police record (a full Police Vetting process will occur)
A full P Class driver’s licence and knowledge of Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga will be an advantage.
