An opportunity exists for an enthusiastic, imaginative historian to join Manatu Taonga – Ministry for Culture and Heritage and contribute to its broad range of history and reference publishing projects.
Korero mo te turanga | About the role
The Ministry’s role is to help make our culture visible and accessible. It provides advice to the New Zealand government on cultural matters and assists government in its provision and management of cultural resources for the benefit of all New Zealanders by funding a range of cultural agencies, and through the direct delivery of various cultural and heritage products and services. The Research and Publishing Group publishes authoritative, accessible information across a range of digital and print platforms.
The Historian will work closely with other content and production staff to research, write and prepare New Zealand history content for publication in digital and other formats. This role has a particular focus on creating and working with oral history/audio-visual content. This includes recording audio and/or video interviews and using this material (and other collections) to curate imaginative and engaging transmedia storytelling experiences for public audiences.
It is expected that the Historian will work on the Ministry’s Te Tai Treaty Settlement Stories project, as well as help maintain and develop our existing products such as the Te Ara and NZHistory websites, and manage an annual Oral History Awards scheme.
Korero mou | About you
You will possess excellent written and oral communication skills, a track record of recording oral history interviews (in audio and video forms) and experience in curating audio-visual material for presentation in digital or other publishing formats.
Ideally you will be familiar with oral history best practice, standards and ethics, and issues around the handling and storage of digital audio-visual material. Knowledge of and interest in Maori history, culture and Te Reo is highly desirable.
