Health New Zealand (HNZ) was established in 2022.
The formation of HNZ marked the beginning of the process of integrating the previous 20 District Health Boards and other related entities into a national organisation.
HNZ's aspiration is to provide quality, compassionate, affordable healthcare to New Zealanders at the right time and in the right place.HNZ manages New Zealand's health system delivery day to day, planning and commissioning services for the whole population.
The scale of HNZ is unprecedented within New Zealand – it employs 85,000 FTE staff, has a $27b annual revenue and manages an asset base of $16b.In July 2024 a Commissioner was appointed tasked with restoring the performance of HNZ by improving patient access to health care services as well as financial discipline.
Significant work has since been undertaken to address HNZ's financial situation and to ensure robust financial management and accountability.A system reset has been initiated to change the way HNZ operates, primarily to address patient waiting times for assessment and treatment – this is about making changes to the flow of patients across the entire health system to promote timely access to all services.
This new way of operating includes moving away from a centralised model and devolving decision making and resources to four regions across the country.
The reset also involves a greater degree of clinical involvement in key decision making.HNZ is seeking an exceptional Chief Executive to lead the organisation through significant change with a laser-like focus on delivering on the Government and Minister of Health's priorities for health.

Given the sheer scale and breadth of HNZ's remit, this is a critical enterprise with wider system leadership that has the capacity to make a real and meaningful difference to New Zealand.Responsibilities and QualificationsCandidates for the role should be proven leaders and possess:Extensive experience and a successful track record of operational delivery within large complex systems;Excellent strategic and people leadership skills, and the ability to articulate a vision for an organisation and inspire a culture of performance and delivery;Extensive experience in leading organisations of significant scale and complexity with large, multi-disciplinary workforces;Demonstrated ability to lead a scale organisation through significant change;Excellent commercial and financial acumen, with a track record of overseeing large budgets and asset bases;Strong experience in navigating political and wider government relationships, and an ability to communicate effectively with media and in other public forums;A total commitment to the mission of New Zealand's public health system and an authentic desire to contribute to the delivery of better health outcomes for patients.HNZ is working alongside executive search firm Kerridge & Partners on the appointment of this role.
