Details of the offer

Fixed Term
Businesses talk about Culture – We live it.
Here at Te Kaunihera o te Tairawhiti - Gisborne District Council, we pull our values from the community we serve. It makes sense then that we are enthusiastic about culture in our workplace. Family, whakapapa and inclusivity are deep seated in our culture. We work hard together to make our people proud and our whanau are why we are so passionate about what we do for the community here at Gisborne District Council.
Te Kaunihera o te Tairawhiti are currently looking for eight people to join our growing Waingake Ngahere Ora team and help shape the future of our region. This important kaupapa is a partnership with Maraetaha Incorporated (the mana whenua of Waingake), with the support of Ngai Tamanuhiri iwi. We respect matauranga Maori and local tikanga and encourage their practice in our roles at Waingake. You will be well supported by a team that prides ourselves on nurturing an inclusive workspace that embraces innovation and creativity.
A bit about you:
You will have a good level of physical fitness and the ability to work in rugged and remote outdoor locations – so maybe you play sports, love tramping, are a keen hunter or have work experience in similar environments. You are respectful of other cultures and have a knowledge of, or are willing to learn about Te Ao Maori. Ideally you will have a passion for our natural world and be keen to learn more about how to protect and restore our native forests, birds and waterways. You are safety conscious, willing to learn new skills and can be a positive team member who listens, works well with others and helps to solve problems.
Your day will look like:
You’ll be working primarily at Waingake, 40km south of Gisborne city. You’ll travel to site with the team and have a site safety briefing before beginning work for the day. You might be spending some time controlling wilding pines and other weeds, or you could be working with the team to put in a new trap line through native forest to help keep predator numbers low. You’ll play a key role in helping to monitor the work we are doing and we’ll provide all the training you need to learn these skills. Along the way you’ll be learning to identify our native rakau and manu, participating in wananga, visiting other restoration projects and becoming a true kaitieki of this special place.
What we offer:
Full time, fixed term role (until June 2024) because we know that job stability is important.
Career progression, training and development to continue your learning and inspire those that come after you.
Awareness of other commitments that impact your work/life balance and support for managing them
A living wage + super in appreciation for the work you do, along with support from MSD if you are eligible.
Who we are:
Gisborne District Council is the local government, both district and regional authority for Tairawhiti, New Zealand. We are the proud winners of the 2019 LGNZ Excellence Awards, for our work to grow and promote the well-being of our community and people. At Gisborne District Council, we see you as more than a cog in the wheel; you are a valued voice for your whanau and community.
Bring your whole self to work: we celebrate this and all it means.
Represent our diverse community and be the guardian of our rich heritage.
Have a hand in our legacy for Tairawhiti’s Tangata and lead the region now and into the future.
So, what are you waiting for? Apply now and bring your passion to this exciting ecological kaupapa!
