Details of the offer

Genuine opportunity to make a difference and improve outcomes for New Zealand families!
Family History Assessor National Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Service
Based in Wellington, New Zealand
Permanent, Full Time (1 FTE, 40 hours weekly)

The NZ Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Service (NZFGCS) aims to reduce the risk of bowel cancer for those who are assessed to be at high risk. Our multidisciplinary team of family history assessors, gastroenterologists, and colorectal surgeons identify, assess and manage people with familial or inherited gastrointestinal (GI) cancer syndromes. The team provides education, information and support to families, including medical management advice and a colonoscopy surveillance reminder programme.
We are seeking expressions of interest for a full time Family History Assessor based in our Wellington office.
Family History Assessors obtain a history to determine the risk of hereditary GI cancer syndromes and provide on-going surveillance and risk management advice. This involves meeting with patients in clinic and/or over the phone for assessment, discussions regarding cancer risks, familial GI cancer syndromes, surveillance recommendations and availability of testing. They also arrange tissue testing for cancer syndromes and referrals to appropriate services.
This role requires a health related degree such as a Masters in Genetic Counselling or a Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent) with preferred experience in the field of gastroenterology, oncology, colorectal surgery or genetics. It will be an advantage to have previous experience working with familial cancer syndromes.
The service is committed to the maintenance of professional accreditation and genetic counselling graduates can work towards obtaining Part 2 of their HGSA accreditation. Clinical training and support is provided to enable development of successful candidates in this very interesting role.
