The Emergency Department sees 45 000 patients per year. Patient mix is broad and a full range of trauma, medical, surgical, paediatric and minor presentations are seen on a regular basis. Senior support is excellent, with one of the highest Consultant to Registrar ratios in the country. Registrars work on average approximately four days per week.
The Dunedin ED is accredited for twelve months of advanced training time by the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM). Our ED is accredited for rural/regional training and is a great place to meet the ACEM rural training time requirement. We are also accredited for the Paediatric Logbook component of training. The Dunedin ED has an ACEM exam preparation programme, an ACEM Examiner and a high pass rate for the College Primary and Fellowship exams. Dunedin Hospital has a range of other accredited Registrar positions (including ICU, anaesthetics and medicine) that College trainees are able to rotate into in order to fulfil the requirements of training. Dunedin’s university offers papers that meet the criteria of the ACEM Trainee Research Requirement Coursework Pathway.
Most importantly, the Dunedin ED has a Rocket espresso machine in the staff room!
So, if you are a minimum of two years post-graduation, want to gain ED experience or advance a career in Emergency Medicine, and you feel like living in a vibrant and scenic city with great outdoor opportunities, then please apply!
