Disability Services is a dynamic department based within the larger Academic Support Department. We work with students to ascertain their requirements for accessing the course of study. We then make sure they get the support they need to be able to be successful learners here at Ara. Joining our team of Disability Support Staff allows you to be part of Ara\'s work in making tertiary education accessible to disabled students throughout the Canterbury region. You will make a difference to the individual lives of students.
The role
We are seeking a disability advisor to provide information, advice and guidance to disabled learners. Responsible to the Manager, Disability Services, the purpose of this position:
To assess the support needs of disabled learners and develop a plan to mitigate those needs
To provide information, advice and guidance to the colleagues who teach and support disabled learners
To assist in the coordination of support for disabled learners to enable them to participate fully in their studies
To work collaboratively with Ara colleagues to ensure that Ara becomes an increasingly inclusive environment in which the needs of disabled learners are consistently met
To provide support to students to enable them to access and use Assistive Technology
Duties:
Liaise with the Disability Services Manager, Disability Advisors, Learning Advisors and academic colleagues to determine the specific requirements of clients (colleagues, learners and/or other stakeholders) to enable the effective delivery of support
Assess disabled learners\' needs across a range of contexts and develop a plan to address these
Provide learners with relevant information re support, strategies, and services available to them
Skills/experience:
At least one year\'s experience of working with Disabled people in an empowering role or a willingness and aptitude to develop these skills
Advanced digital literacy skills necessary to undertake all aspects of learning development delivery
The ability to work with a variety of online tools including the Internet, a customer management system and a learner record system
Successful completion of three years of tertiary study
