Evidence-Based Policing is about using information, crime-science and problem-solving methods to ensure that proven approaches and tactics inform our choices, are seen in the results, and provide confidence that what we do works.

Evidence-Based Policing presents an opportunity for New Zealand Police to embed an evidence base into all of our operations. This is an opportunity to contribute to the formation of the newly created Evidence-Based Policing Service Centre.

As a Data Scientist you will play a role in ensuring data and information supports decision making across New Zealand Police. You will enable Evidence-Based Policing through the provision of data, information, analytics and applied data science. This includes managing data and information, making it accessible and understandable across the business, championing data visualisation, developing a suite of reporting metrics, and undertaking a range of analyses to derive greater value from the data and information New Zealand Police collect.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong user or consumer focus to all aspects of your work and have a positive and pro-active working style.

Skills - the following experience and attributes are essential to be successful in this role:

Extensive experience using a range of statistical, analytical and data visualisation tools including SAS, R Cran, Shiny, Python, ArcGIS, and Tableau

Advanced analytical skills including trend analysis, multivariate analysis, regression analysis, and statistical or machine learning

Strong written and oral communication skills

At least 2 years' experience in managing, analysing and reporting administrative data in a large organisation

Qualification Requirements:

A tertiary qualification containing a significant component of statistics or other mathematical discipline. For example a postgraduate qualification in data science, criminology, biological sciences or social sciences with a significant statistics component

Special Requirement:
