Supplier Opportunity – Deconstruction & Material Recovery
Kakanui River Bridge
Be part of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to recover heritage materials and deliver value back to the Waitaki community.
Overview: After 126 years of service, the second Kakanui River Bridge is being replaced.
The new bridge is under construction and scheduled for completion in the first half of ****.
The existing bridge will serve the community one last time — through a planned deconstruction and material recovery project.
Valuable Australian hardwoods and other materials will be salvaged for recycling, repurposing, and reuse, bringing lasting benefit to the Waitaki community.
Opportunity
Waitaki District Council is seeking early engagement with suppliers who can:
Deconstruct the timber bridge, removing all structure above the riverbed.
Recover and purchase salvaged materials for reuse or sale.
Maximise community value by balancing deconstruction cost with recovered material value.
This opportunity could be delivered by one supplier or a collaborative partnership.
What We Know About the Bridge
Primary Materials: Australian hardwoods (Jarrah, Ironbark, Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Tallowwood).
Other Timber: Pinus Radiata H4-treated decking (125 × 50 mm, replaced in ****s) and isolated struts.
Structure Size: 172 m long, 16-span timber bridge.
Piles: 60 timber piles, 5–7 m into riverbed (exact lengths unconfirmed).
Deconstruction Access: From the bridge deck, with limited riverbed access at low tide.
Site Condition: All recovered materials must be removed during deconstruction.
Supplier Attributes Sought
Proven experience with heritage timber bridge removal.
Ability to handle, store, and market high-value hardwoods.
Commitment to safe, environmentally responsible deconstruction.
Willingness to work within Council partnership frameworks.
Why Engage Now?
Early market discussions will help shape the procurement approach.
Bridge timber condition will be best for recovery before further weathering.
Potential to influence the contract model for mutual value.
