Who we are
There are eleven National Science Challenges (NSCs) funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), which aim to tackle the biggest science based issues and opportunities facing New Zealand. These bring together the country’s top scientists to work collaboratively across disciplines, institutions and borders to achieve their objectives. The University of Otago hosts the Ageing Well NSC. The Ageing Well NSC Director is accountable to an external Governance Group, approved by MBIE, and Challenge Collaborating Parties under the terms of the NSC Investment Contract with MBIE and the Collaboration Agreement with Challenge Parties.
The role
As a Communications Manager, you will develop and implement communication strategies and plans to enable Ageing Well NSC (AWNSC) to undertake effective and efficient two-way communication with its external and internal stakeholders and audiences as part of assisting AWNSC to meet its operational needs and strategic objectives.
Objectives:
Communications and engagement with a wide variety of stakeholder and end user organisations to promote research impact – i.e. the integration of research findings and evidence into policy and practice – will be key to success, as well as the overall management of the AWNSC media and communications presence.
Your skills and experience
• A university degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Successful experience in producing communications strategies and plans, and implementing these for organisations.
• Ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, to a range of audiences.
• Strong editing skills and ability to translate technical writing into reader friendly content.
• Experience working with websites and social media.
• Demonstrated experience in successful news media management and/or public relations, handling complex, controversial or sensitive topics.
• Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Sound judgement, tact and discretion.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects with minimum supervision, guided by approved strategy and policies.

This is a part-time (0.5 FTE), fixed term position to 30 June 2024.
It is our intention that interviews for this position will be held in mid July 2020.
