Job Description: Career Development Consultant
Position Purpose: Massey Career Centre (MCC) supports Massey students and recent

alumni in their career planning and professional development. It works

to help them to understand and navigate the career development

process, provides career planning and job search assistance, and

promotes career readiness competencies.

Offering an extensive range of resources and activities to help them

develop the skills and knowledge they need to enhance their career

readiness; MCC is committed to delivering work to a high professional

standard and continually enhancing and developing the services offered.

MCC also works with colleges to provide professional employability

support and with professional partners, including employers, to enhance

student and graduate work-readiness and recruitment.

MCC's Career Development Consultants provide careers advice and

guidance to Massey students and graduates, enabling them to make

effective career decisions and manage their careers successfully in NZ

and internationally. Additionally, they bring creative ideas and innovative

approaches to professional skills development within MCC, academic

departments and other areas of the university.

The post-holder will contribute to the design, development, delivery,

and evaluation of careers education initiatives. This will include, but will

not be limited to, one-to-one support, seminars, workshops, and

networking events.

The post-holder will join a small careers team which is actively involved
in employer outreach, working with employers at a regional, national,
and global level; supporting students' career learning and the
development of their professional skills; organising and contributing to
activities designed to enhance overall student experience and
participating and contributing to professional networks with colleagues
from other tertiary institutions in NZ and internationally.

If based on the Manawatu campus, regular travel to Wellington will be
required.

About this area The Career Centre sits within the Student Development and Partnerships
area, working collaboratively with other staff to provide service and
programmes for students to enhance their academic journey.

Accountabilities

Career Development • Students understand, and are encouraged to engage with, the career
Process development process and can identify personal objectives, set goals,
and navigate career readiness, skills development opportunities, job
search and selection processes

o Contribute to the development and establishment of initiatives to
encourage students to identify and pursue career goals and to
take control of their career learning.

o Introduce the career management process to current students to
ensure an accurate understanding of career centre offerings and
establish appropriate student expectations and responsibilities.

o Contribute to the development of MCC as an active member of
the team and through work on cross-team projects, in particular
with MCC and Student Development and Partnership team
colleagues.

o Provide targeted support to cohorts (such as international
students).

Career Planning • Students are supported in their career learning and planning through
the provision of targeted resources, learning, self-help, and

development opportunities.
o Contribute to the development and delivery of career learning

seminars, workshops, presentations etc., centrally and for
academic departments.

o Contribute to the curation, development and use of resources
that meet the career needs of Massey students and recent
graduates, with consideration for their diverse occupational,
study and geographical interests.

o Provide one-on-one advice to students and recent graduates, in
person and online, using a range of delivery methods and
platforms as appropriate.

o Provide e-guidance in response to queries received.
o Refer students to academic advisors, and other support services,

where appropriate, recognising professional boundaries.
o Contribute to MCC endeavours to engage employers and alumni

in the development, and delivery, of career learning seminars,
workshops, presentations, related resources etc.

Career Readiness • Students have identified and developed competencies that they can
articulate and demonstrate to future employers or draw on in their own

enterprise ventures.
o Design and implement a requisite number of professional

learning opportunities per semester to enhance development of
graduate attributes and employability characteristics.

o Guide students to develop industry-relevant personal profiles
e.g., portfolios, CVs, LinkedIn profiles, and professional blogs that
articulate their relevant skills, attributes, and achievements.

o Build students' understanding of how to search for, and apply for,
jobs and to prepare for interviews and other selection activities.

o Work with the wider Student Services team on student personal
development initiatives such as Strengths@Massey, leadership
programmes, promoting volunteering, professionally based clubs
and networks to enrich students' understanding of skills
development and for them to gain, and articulate, relevant skills.

o Contribute to the university-wide focus on building
entrepreneurial capability, maximising opportunities for students
to engage in work-integrated learning and on enhanced
sustainability

College, Industry and • MCC actively builds, maintains, and enhances relationships with key

Community Liaison internal and external stakeholders to deliver targeted career

development support and opportunities for students.



o Develop and nurture constructive relationships with academics,
academic advisors, other staff, and relevant alumni building a
functional knowledge of the career development needs the
student population. This may involve being based within, or
seconded to, one of Massey's colleges for specific periods.

o Collaborate with academic staff to develop and deliver industry-
specific career exploration programmes and activities and other
appropriate interventions.

o Build a knowledge base of relevant graduate attributes and
graduate outcome/destination information.

o Work with employers and coordinate logistics for recruitment and
related campus and online activities including information
sessions and industry panels as well as communication of job
opportunities to students.

o Partner with student groups to bring speakers, alumni, and target
employers to campus/on-line activities to prepare students for
professional settings.

o Develop and maintain effective networks both internally and
externally.

MCC Practice and • MCC builds its practice excellence by supporting strong staff

o Contribute to the design evolution of the 'MyHub' student

intranet portal and its subpages.
o Remain abreast of new career trends and key developments

across the NZ tertiary sector, re-assessing strengths of MCC'S

current offer against such developments and offering suggestions
on the implementation of new initiatives.

o Undertake effective monitoring and evaluation, where
appropriate, providing regular updates on progress to the MCC
Team Leader.

o Collaborate with MCC colleagues to ensure that students and
alumni are well informed about career services available to them.

o Contribute to the development of material to support career
learning, including handouts, worksheets, articles, and social
media posts, as appropriate

Other To deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility may be required in the duties

performed to meet the service requirements. Evening hours and some weekend
hours may be required. So, too, will be the ability to carry out other duties which

may reasonably be required by your Team Leader from time to time during the

University's business and which fit the role's purpose as stated, and for which the

position holder is qualified or has received adequate training or instruction.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications: • A tertiary qualification is essential.

* Qualifications in career development, human resources or training

are preferred

Experience: • Knowledge of career development and related theories. Being an
associate or professional member of a career-related organisation
would be beneficial.

* Experience of career advising. Candidates with a focus on tertiary

education, or a related field, preferred with proven ability to improve
graduate outcomes for students.
* Previous experience of careers work in a tertiary setting, OR

experience of graduate recruitment or similar professional
experience is essential.
* Experience within an entrepreneurial or creative arts environment

would be beneficial.
* An awareness and ability to meet the needs to a wide range of

students from different nationalities and cultures and at different life

and career stages. Many of our students are studying by distance

and may have significant life and work experience.

* Understanding of the graduate and postgraduate labour market and

of employment sectors that Massey students target including

knowledge of recruitment procedures, job profiles and career

development paths.
